August Antics

August Antics 2016

August Antics 2016

A Brief Overview of the weekend.

August Antics is our annual fun festival for young sailors at the club. Run over the 3 days of the August Bank Holiday, 27 & 28 August 2016, this is an excellent opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and have fun on the water. There will be excellent training and excitement in Oppies, Terras and Toppers for everyone from beginners to experts.

The event is open to all junior members aged between 8 and 16 and there are 50 places available.  If there are more applicants than this then priority will be given to August Antics first-timers. Numbers may have to be cut if insufficient volunteer RYA Dinghy Instructors and parent helpers are available. The closing date for applications is 15th August 2016 following which numbers and successful applicants will be confirmed.

The event is only possible with the assistance of parents and helpers: there are about as many helpers as there are sailors. Please use the application form to indicate what help you can provide.

This year we are also running a 3 Day Race Training course for the more experienced sailors with RYA coaches giving technical advice to our young sailors as well as some theory.  This course will be held over 27, 28 & 29th August. If you are interested please put on the entry for RYA Training for level of sailor.

For this course your child will NEED to provide his or her own boat if in a Topper. Feva sailors will need to book Sailing Club boats.

The cost of the event is a £45. Please download and send an application form for each sailor by 10th August 2016.

Many thanks

Mike Kew

Falmouth 2016

WAYFARERS AT FALMOUTH JULY 9TH -16th

On a busy Saturday twelve Wayfarer sailors towing four boats made the 165 mile journey down to Falmouth for their annual summer cruise. John Lethridge (Lefty), who sailed with Colin Shepherd to the Scillies last year, joined us with his own Mark 4.

Normally all boats are equipped with anchors, oars, paddles and most have an outboard engine. We do embark on some quite long day trips so safety is paramount throughout. On the first day the boats are rigged at the Falmouth “Park and Float” and motor down to the floating pontoon belonging to our hosts the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club where they are moored for the week. Each morning there is a conference between the skippers/owners as to the destination for the day. This is dependent upon the weather and tide conditions. It is customary for the owner to stay with his boat with the rest of us, the crew, changing boats daily. Usually we sail with a total of three up changing duties round at regular intervals.

Welcome to Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club

Sail for Gold Regatta - Follow the action

Chew Valley Lake is the biggest inland waterway in the south-west of England and a great place to sail.

The lake is situated on the northern edge of the beautiful Mendip hills, eight miles south of Bristol.

The picturesque surroundings make the lake a popular destination for walkers, picnickers, bird watchers and anglers as well as sailors.

On the water, the Club can easily cater for fleets of over one hundred boats and we have in the past been called upon to host many large events. Five separate slipways enable easy launching. Off the water, the clubhouse facilities include large changing rooms, hot showers, galley run by professional caterer (serving hot and cold lunches, light refreshments and drinks) at the weekends, a fully licensed bar and terrace overlooking the lake.

We also cater for disabled people with facilities on both floors and a lift.

The Club is open for sailing on Wednesday, Thursday and every weekend with racing held on Wednesday evenings and Sundays. Various sailing courses are held at the club including RYA training, various youth training, powerboat training, race officer training as well as more informal training run within each fleet. A selection of dinghies is also available for members to try.

If you are interested in joining the club then why not come down on a Saturday or Sunday, have a chat with one of our friendly members and have a look at what we have to offer. The good news is that you may not have to wait too long to join as sometimes we have vacancies throughout the year.
