Windsurfing

Windsurfing at Chew is restricted in two ways. It is only allowed outside of the fishing season which limits it to between mid October and mid March.

Only dinghy sailing members of the club are allowed to windsurf, you cannot join the club just as a windsurfer. Chew also is not particularly suited to windsurfing. The club is based on the western shore making the prevailing south-westerly an off-shore and gusty wind. The club is also very sheltered which can make getting back difficult for short boards. Conditions are best at Chew when a southerly is blowing. The hills funnel the wind, increasing it by one or two forces. Some reasonably sized (for a lake) waves also start to form.

Alternative locations for windsurfing are Weston (good for short boards, waves but very tidal and muddy), Bristol Corinthian Sailing Club near Cheddar (members only, good for beginners and flat water blasting in south-westerlies), LLandegfedd, north of Newport (good for beginners, open to the public) and Weymouth (great for everything).
