Welcome to My Blog

On Wednesday we held our last Winter warmer for the season. There was a great turnout for our guest speaker, Adam Bowers. I’m sure you have all been staring at your sails looking for that elusive “fourth corner” and have spent the week sticking bits of wool to the entire surface of your sails! My thanks To John Smalley for organising and to George Simpkins and Brian Brooks for manning the bar.

Happy New year to one and all.  After the lake was frozen last week normal service resumed on Sunday. This was after the remnants of the ice were blown to the east shore by a welcome 20 kts breeze. Sorry for those who left early and missed a  cracking sail with no ice at all left !!! Thanks to Rick Adams and Hugh Nettlefield and the other rescue helms who created enough waves to disturb the ice and then let the wind do its best. A great day’s sail.

Junior Challenge Series

The Sunday morning Junior Challenge Summer Series and the Junior Challenge Series overall came to an exciting conclusion on the 4th October. The majority of the Summer Series races were fitted in with club racing and it was great to see so many Toppers lining up with the other fleets, in fact the Toppers often formed the biggest turnout of a single class. In total 8 races were sailed in the Summer Series and there were 20 entrants in all with 9 qualifiers. This was another hotly contested series with only 4 points separating the top three boats. It was eventually won by James Seager who was a deserved winner having sailed every race and put in some determined performances. The final results for the Summer Series were:

1st James Seager

2nd Edward Parry

3rd Edward Schofield

Most Improved Miriam Woodbridge

That brings us on to the results for the Junior Challenge Series Overall. The results for this were based on both the Spring and Summer Series. Altogether there were 15 races sailed, with 22 entrants and 13 qualifiers but in the end it came down to two sailors, Ed Schofield and James Seager, who went into the final race with just one point separating them. I’m not sure who was feeling the pressure more the helpless parents on the balcony or the sailors. After a slow start Ed managed to work his way up through the fleet to second, beating James back into fourth, and clinching by one point the trophy he so desperately wanted to win. Needless to say it was a tremendously exciting finish to what had been an eventful series. The final results were:

1st Edward Schofield

2nd James Seager

3rd Holly O’Grady

4th James Cummins

Most Improved Girl: Freya Cumpsty

Most Improved Boy:  Richard Parry

Revised PY Nos in use at Chew Valley Lake S C

Why is the committee adjusting PY numbers at Chew?

The RYA Portsmouth Yardstick scheme is over 30 years old and is designed to support handicap racing between dinghies or yachts of different classes.  The handicaps or “Portsmouth Yardsticks” represent an average for the class over the whole range of sailing conditions.   The RYA refine the numbers annually, based upon returns from UK sailing clubs.   The adjustments tend to be very small and gradual and average out the performance of classes at clubs as diverse as Saltford on the river Avon, Frampton gravel pit, Chew Valley Lake and Portishead.   The RYA has long recognised that the average may not suit local conditions and their process recommends that clubs should adjust their numbers to reflect local experience.
